Aims And Hypothesis Flashcards
What is an aim
Identifies the purpose of the study
What is an independent variable
The thing you change
What is a dependent variable
The thing you measure
What is an extraneous variable
A variable thats not being investigated but might have an effect on the study
What is a hypothesis
A precise testable statement of what the researchers will predict as to be the outcome of the study
What is meant by operationalism
The attempt to define all scientific concepts in terms of specifically described operations of measurement and observation
Null hypothesis
States that there is no relationship between the two variables being studied
Alternative hypothesis
States that there is a relationship between the two variables being studied (one affects the other)
Directional hypothesis
States the direction of the differance or relationship between the two variables
Whats the other name for a directional hypothesis
One tailed
Non directional hypothesis
Doesn’t predict the direction or relationship of the hypothesis
Whats the other name for a non directional hypothesis
Two tailed
When do you use a directional hypothesis
When a previous research suggests that the findings of a study will go in a particular direction
When do you use non directional hypothesis
When there is little previous research on a particular topic or the previous search didn’t come to any particular conclusion
How do you write a null hypothesis
First start by asking a question, then rephrase that question in a form that assumes no relationship between the variables
