Experimental Design Flashcards
A study where researchers assign treatments/ behaviors to participants
An experiment
Participants select their own treatments and behaviors without interference from researchers
Observational study
Can an observational study determine cause and effect?
No
Smallest subdivision to which a treatment is applied (subject)
Experimental unit
A condition or behavior imposed upon the experimental unit
Treatment
Variable that researchers directly control to induce changes in response variable
Explanatory variable
Variable researchers don’t directly control but are interested in truing to influence via explanatory variable
Response Variable
Used to provide baseline of comparison
Control group
Subjects are assigned to treatment groups. They receive their treatments then the response variable for each subject is measured once.
Completely randomized design
Each experimental unit produces a pair of measurements and we compare the difference for each treatment
Matched pair designs
Each subject is compared against their own baseline
Matched pair
We compare the average value of the response against groups
Completely randomized
