Experiment Design Flashcards
Independent Variable
manipulated, effect being studied
Dependent
Outcome may b effected by IV
Operationalization of variables
ensure inter rater reliability and also needed in order to replicate experiment so we can get generalizability
control group
group not exposed to the independent variable
experimental group
groups that are exposed to some form of independent variable
Population
all the cases of the group from which samples may be drawn for a study
Random sampling
method by which participants are selected to be included in the study
EACH MEMBER HAS AN EQUAL CHANCE OF INCLUSION
Representative sample
fairly represents the population because each member of the population has an equal chance of inclusion
Random assignment
to assign members to study groups that include participants with similar characteristics so groups are equivalent
Confounding variables
Factors other than IV that can change Dv
solution: random assignment
Double blind studies
neither the participants or experimenter know who is receiving a particular treatment
to reduce experimenter bias
Single Blind
subjects are unaware of which group they’re in
Resolves experimental demand
Validity
credibility or belief of the research
Internal Validit
the instruments or procedures used in research measured what they were supposed to
Generalizability
the results can b generalised beyond the immediate study
