Procedure

A

Participants completed dichotic listening where they were played a passage of light fiction in right ear which they had to shadow. At the same time, a list of simple words read into other ear 35 yptimes

Procedure pt2

A

At the end of the fast, the participants were given a recognition task of a list of 21 words- 7 of which had appeared in the shadowed message, 7 from rejected, 7 from neither. Asked to identify which words they had heard

A

Shadowed passage - mean of 4.9 recognised
Rejected passage - mean of 1.9 recognised
Neither - mean of 2.6

Conclusion

A

Participants are much more able to recognise words from the shadowed passage. Almost none of the words from the rejected message is able to break the barrier.
