Experiences of Italian and Jewish immigrants/ migration and empire Flashcards
Experiences of Italian immigrants
Italians lived all across Scotland and were attracted to areas where there was already an established Italian community.
Italian immigrants brought their traditional culture, music, and food cuisine to Scotland.
Many Italians opened up shops and cafes to sell ice cream and fish and chips.
There was little integration between the Scots and Italians communities. Italian families tended to keep to themselves.
In the early 1900s the number of Italian Catholics in the population grew significantly.
Experiences of Jewish immigrants
Jewish communities established their own loan societies to help start businesses.
Jewish immigrants brought their traditional culture, religion, music, and food cuisine to Scotland.
Many Jews settled in Glasgow, especially in poorer areas such as the Gorbals.
