Railways faster and reached more places leading to the demise of canals.
Time had to be standardised across Britain due to railways timetables being created.
Mail can arrive faster = First Class Mail.
Building of Railways, meant lots of jobs, NAVVIES.
Impact on the countryside.
Politics becoming more accessible to the public.
Creation of seaside tourist towns.

Decline of canals

A

Development of railways.
Cheaper to build.
Canals slower and couldn’t carry as heavy loads as Railways. Canals expensive to maintain.
Froze in winter.
Dried up in summer.
