EXPERIENCE OF JEWISH IMMIGRANTS Flashcards
RELIGIOUS/ECONOMIC PROBLEMS
A:move to S between 1881 and 1911=religious and economic persecution they faced in Russia, settle in Dundee, Edin + mostly Glasgow
B:often settled near each other in areas w/ cheap accommodation, so they could speak Yiddish w/ others whilst settling in S
C:fairly POS+ experience as J opened bakeries + butchers, successful in tailoring/cigarette trade.
NOT A THREAT
A: didn’t compete w/ S in labour market, self-employed, looked after one another=not seen as drain on Poor Law
B: some S accused J paying low wages + operating ‘sweatshops’= little evidence being more common in J businesses than in S ones.
C:fairly POS+ experience=antisemitism nothing compared to east europe, small population meant S not concerned w/ them, tolerated but not accepted
ANTISEMITISM
A:faced some A.S in S, yet not widespread/on scale in east europe
B:A.S organisations not gain much traction in S, defeat of anti-immigrant leg help keep intolerance at bay.
C: POS+ experience=greatly helped J to assimilate in S, in particular Glasgow = “Scottish Jews”
