CAFE POPULARITY
A: mostly welcomed due to popularity of cafes
B:foods=popular among middle class + italian cafes, place where youth commune, Nardini’s/Luca’s family run parlour
C:led to claim that cafes were immoral, encouraged youth to misbehave, other saw it as good alternative to public houses. POS= experience
NOT A THREAT
A: assimilate well/lack conflict w/ S=no threat to jobs or wages unlike L
B: at home, spoke I/food I, married other I, sent money home=future laid back at home rather than S
C:long working hours due to popular cafes=not integrate w/ other S, NEG+ experience assimilation wasn’t as easy as other groups
HARD WORKERS
A: I were hard workers= daily 7 days a week
B: I would also work on Sundays= some S protestants/Presbyterian angered by this
C: NEG- experience= felt they were working on God’s rest day
POLITICAL VIEWS
A: Mussolini in gov in I=many I kept PV in line w/ italian fascist gov
B: I began to form fascist groups in S, La Casa Del Fascio=S opposed, infringe on GB democracy values
C:NEG- assimilation=prejudice from S= I repelled from integrating+move back to I
SCOTTISH CULTURE
A:Some I adapted to S culture and took on more Scottish identities
B:2nd generation Italians took on Scottish names, like Joe or Eilidh
C:POS+ experience, S people like I becoming more associated/assimilated into S society
