Expansion cards and slots Flashcards
What are expansion cards?
Expansion cards are optional devices that can be inserted into expansion slots. They provide additional functionality or upgrade an existing function.
List the different types of expansion cards.
Graphics card, network interface cards (NIC), and wireless network cards.
What is a graphics card?
A graphics card improves 3D graphics and animations for games and simulations.
What are expansion slots?
Expansion slots allow users to expand their systems and are located on the system board but can also be connected through the graphics card.
What is an NIC?
A network interface card connects a computer to a network; this allows the computer to share data, programs, and hardware.
What is a wireless network card?
A wireless network card allows the computer to be connected to a network wirelessly.
What are SD cards?
SD cards are finger-nail-sized expansion cards that can be plugged into expansion slots available on most cell phones, tablets, and laptops.
What are SD cards used for?
SD cards can hold files like photos and videos and can be used as an extension to your device’s storage.
What is a bus?
A bus connects the different parts of a CPU together and to other components on the system board as well.
What is bus width?
Bus width is the number of bits that can travel simultaneously down a bus.
What are the different types of buses?
System buses, expansion buses, Universal Serial Bus, Firewire, buses, peripheral component interconnect express (PCIe).
What are system buses?
System buses connect the Cpu to memory on the system board.
What are expansion buses?
Expansion buses connect the Cpu to other components on the system board.
What are USBs?
A universal serial bus is connected to a hub, then to the USB bus, which then connects to the PCI bus on the system board.
What are FireWire buses?
FireWire buses are similar to USB buses but they focus more on connecting audio and video equipment to the system board.
