Exotics (RODENTS) Flashcards
What should you check under GA in and oral exam?
Check both buccal and lingual aspects of mandibular and maxillary
arcades. Use little finger to palpate spurs especially lingual mandibular
arcade.
In the myomorph rodents eg rats, mice etc, and scuriomorph rodents eg
chipmunks, squirrels: only what are continuously growing?
Incisors.
How are overlong incisors treated?
These are
fairly simple to trim, preferably under a short volatile anaesthesia. Incisor
removal very delicate and jaw fracture common.
In the myomorph rodents eg rats, mice etc, and scuriomorph rodents eg
chipmunks, squirrels: only incisors are continuously growing. what is more common?
dental caries is more likely in non-continuously growing teeth
and abscesses are possible, although associated with tooth fractures etc
rather than the odontogenic abscesses found in rabbits, guinea pigs etc.
Hystericomorph rodents such as chinchillas and cavies have continuously
growing?
Incisors and cheek teeth.
Hystericomorph rodents such as chinchillas and cavies have continuously
growing Incisors and cheek teeth. So are predisposed to which disease?
Cheek tooth abnormalities are common,
requiring similar treatment options to rabbits, although in chinchilla more
aggressive burring is possibly useful, and its vital to check under the gum and close to gingiva as this is often hyperplastic, with pockets of periodontal infection.
In Cavies how are the cheek teeth positioned?
The cheek teeth occlude with their opposite
numbers at approximately 45 degrees, rather than having a flat occlusal
plane, and so they must be maintained in that shape or malocclude.
