Exothermic and endothermic reactions Flashcards
During chemical reactions what can be said about the energy in the surroundings?
Energy is either transferred to or from the surroundings.
An exothermic reaction is one that does what?
Transfers energy to the surroundings (gives it out).
Examples of exothermic reactions:
Combustion.
many oxidation reactions.
Neutralisation.
Everyday examples of exothermic reactions:
Self heating cans (eg: for coffee).
Hand warmers.
An endothermic reaction is one that does what?
Transfers energy from the surroundings (uses it).
Examples of endothermic reactions:
Thermal decompositions.
Everyday examples of endothermic reactions:
Sports injury packs.
If a reversible reaction is exothermic one way, what is it the other way?
Endothermic.
What can be said about the energy in a endo/exothermic reversible reaction?
The amount of energy transferred each way is the same.
