Exophytic Lesions Flashcards
1
Q
What is a hamartoma?
A
An overgrowth of mature cells and tissues normally present in the affected area, but with disorganization and often with one element predominating
-ex) a mole
2
Q
Define mesenchyme.
A
Embryonic connective tissue in the mesoderm from which are formed the various connective tissues of the body and the blood and lymphatic vessels
3
Q
What are the the common groups of soft tissue exophytic lesions?
A
- reactive
-hamartomatous - neoplasms
BUT distinctions between groups is often blurred
4
Q
Describe Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma.
A
- common oral benign soft tissue lesion
- localized, smooth, solid mass, often with a shallow ulcer
- located on gingiva (generally anterior)
- calcification in cellular fibrous tissue
- AKA cementuo-ossifying fibroma
5
Q
Describe peripheral giant cell granuloma.
A
- common oral benign soft tissue lesion
- dark red or bluish, locally aggressive, vascular mall located on the gingiva anterior to molars
- causes bone resorption
- can occur on edentulous ridge
- most common in women, any age
- characterized by giant cells in a loose vascular stroma
- if intra-osseous origin, hyperparathyroidism should be ruled out
6
Q
Describe pyogenic granuloma
A
- common oral benign soft tissue lesion
- soft red vascular mass,, most common on gingiva but can occur anywhere
- rapid development
- response to low grade irritation
- characterized by granulation tissue (highly vascular connective tissue and inflammatory cells)
7
Q
Describe fibrous hyperplasia.
A
- common oral benign soft tissue lesion
- most common
- presents on all mucosal surfaces
- smooth and sessile, occasionally pedunculated
- the result of collagen deposition in response to chronic irritation
8
Q
Epulis fissuratum
A
- clinically distinct fibrous hyperplasia
- linear exophytic growth occurring adjacent to edentulous ridges in response to irritation from a poorly fitting denture
9
Q
Leaf fibroma
A
- clinically distinct fibrous hyperplasia
- flattened exophytic palatal lesion occurring under a denture surface
- resembles a leaf
10
Q
Giant Cell Fibroma
A
- distinctive variant characterized by large stellate shaped and occasionally multinucleated fibroblasts
- smooth or loublated, often confused with papilloma
- not caused by irritation
- not a granuloma
