Existence of God - Philosophical Responses Flashcards
What did Stephen Hawking say about the Cosmological Argument and how does that link to the existence of God?
He believes that even if there was a first cause, there is no evidence to prove it was one God. It could have been anything.
What did Bertrand Russell say about the Cosmological Argument and how does that link to the existence of God?
“The Universe is just there and that’s all. We should just accept that it exists” He says it’s not fair to say that everything needs a cause except God? What caused God?
The Universes may not have a cause it might be eternal. He says that when people say that the Universe has a beginning they may simply lack imagination.
What did David Hume say about the Cosmological Argument and how does that link to the existence of God?
“Why does the Universe need a beginning? If God can be self-caused why can’t this be true of the universe itself? How can we know what happened at the beginning of the Universe if none of us were there to witness it?”
How does David Hume go against the Teleological Argument?
He says that you cannot compare a watch which is mechanical, to the world which is organic. He says that mechanical objects have designers, organic objects do not have designers.
