Exhaust Systems Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 main functions of the exhaust system?
A
- Safely and efficiently remove harmful exhaust gases from the engine
- Reduce engine noise and emissions
- Improve fuel efficiency
2
Q
What is the role of the catalytic converter?
A
- Converts exhaust gases (CO and hydrocarbons) into less harmful gasses
- Includes a reduction and oxidation catalyst
3
Q
What are the oxidation reactions in a catalytic converter?
A
- 2CO + O2 → 2CO2
- HC + O2 → CO2 + H2O
4
Q
What are the reduction reactions in a catalytic converter?
A
- 2NO → N2 + O2 - Reduction
- 2NO2 → N2 + 2O2 – Reduction
5
Q
What is the role of the muffler?
A
- Reduces noise by dampening soundwaves created by exhaust gases
- Contains tubes, channels and holes designed to cancel out sound waves before the gases escape the pipe
6
Q
What is the role of the extractor (exhaust header)?
A
- Facilitates an efficient exhaust gases removal from engines resulting in more complete combustion
7
Q
What are the effects of an extractor?
A
- Air-fuel ratio increases, producing more power
- Louder sound due to more gases in the muffler
