Cooling System Flashcards
What is the function of the cooling system?
To maintain the engine’s optimal operating temperature by removing heat
What is the role of the radiator?
Consists of inlet pipe for heated liquid and outlet pipe for cooled liquid
Cools liquid through high-efficiency heat exchange process
How is heat removed from the engine?
Ducts are filled with coolant which removes heat from cylinders
What is the role of the water pump?
Circulates coolant in a closed loop and rotated by a belt drive
What is the role of the thermostat?
Divides system in 2 circuits
Longer one uses radiator, Shorter one is where cool coolant passes
What are key features of the air cooling system?
- Air is the medium
- Cooling fins transmit heat
- Found in smaller engines
- Cheaper
- Easier to install
- Lower efficiency
- Noisy at high fan speeds
What are the key features of the liquid cooling system?
- Coolant is the medium
- Coolant absorbs heat and transmit it to radiator
- Found in larger engines
- More expensive
- Higher efficiency
- Quiter operation
