Exhaust system_ Flashcards
What is the function of the Exhaust Manifold?
Collects exhaust gases from the engine’s cylinders and directs them into the exhaust pipe.
The manifold funnels the gases from multiple cylinders into one pipe.
Where is the Exhaust Manifold located?
Attached to the cylinder head of the engine.
What is the function of the Oxygen Sensor?
Measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases to optimize fuel efficiency.
Sends data to the engine control unit (ECU) to adjust fuel mixture for better combustion.
Where is the Oxygen Sensor located?
In the exhaust pipe, either before or after the catalytic converter.
What is the function of the Catalytic Converter?
Reduces harmful emissions by converting toxic gases into less harmful substances.
Uses a chemical reaction to change harmful substances like carbon monoxide into safer ones like carbon dioxide.
Where is the Catalytic Converter located?
Between the exhaust manifold and muffler, under the vehicle.
What is the function of the Muffler?
Reduces noise produced by the exhaust gases.
Absorbs sound waves through perforated tubes and resonators inside.
Where is the Muffler located?
At the rear end of the exhaust system.
What is the function of the Exhaust Pipe?
Directs exhaust gases from the engine out of the vehicle.
Gases flow through pipes from the exhaust manifold to the muffler and out the tailpipe.
Where is the Exhaust Pipe located?
Running along the underside of the vehicle, ending at the rear.
