Engine System Flashcards
What is the function of a cylinder?
Holds the fuel and air mixture that is ignited to create power.
How does a cylinder work?
Cylinders contain pistons that move up and down as combustion occurs.
Where is the cylinder located?
Inside the engine block.
What is the function of a piston?
Converts the force from combustion into mechanical energy.
How does a piston work?
Pistons move up and down in the cylinders to transfer the energy created by combustion to the crankshaft.
Where is the piston located?
Inside the engine’s cylinders.
What is the function of a crankshaft?
Converts the up-and-down motion of the pistons into rotational energy to power the vehicle.
How does a crankshaft work?
The crankshaft rotates as the pistons push against it.
Where is the crankshaft located?
Inside the engine block, attached to the pistons.
What is the function of a camshaft?
Controls the opening and closing of the engine’s intake and exhaust valves.
How does a camshaft work?
Rotates to operate the timing of the valves, ensuring air and exhaust gases move in and out at the right moments.
Where is the camshaft located?
Inside the engine block, usually near the top.
What is the function of valves (intake & exhaust)?
Intake valves allow air and fuel to enter the cylinder, and exhaust valves allow combustion gases to exit.
How do valves (intake & exhaust) work?
The camshaft operates the valves to open and close at the proper timing during the intake and exhaust strokes.
Where are the valves (intake & exhaust) located?
On the cylinder head, above the pistons.
