car components Flashcards
What is the function of a battery?
Powers electrical components and starts the engine.
How does a battery work?
Stores electrical energy and releases it when needed.
Where is the battery located?
Typically in the engine bay, near the front.
What is the function of an alternator?
Charges the battery and powers the electrical system.
How does an alternator work?
Converts mechanical energy from the engine into electrical energy.
Where is the alternator located?
Attached to the engine.
What is the function of a transmission?
Transmits power from the engine to the wheels and controls speed and torque.
How does a transmission work?
Uses gears to adjust power. Manual transmissions require the driver to shift gears; automatics do it themselves.
Where is the transmission located?
Beneath the vehicle, between the engine and driveshaft.
What is the function of a radiator?
Cools the engine by dissipating heat from the coolant.
How does a radiator work?
Coolant absorbs heat and is cooled in the radiator by airflow.
Where is the radiator located?
Front of the engine bay, near the grille.
What is the function of a fuel pump?
Sends fuel from the tank to the engine.
How does a fuel pump work?
Creates pressure to move fuel to the engine’s injectors.
Where is the fuel pump located?
Inside the fuel tank or along the fuel line.
What is the function of an air filter?
Filters dirt and debris from the air before it enters the engine.
How does an air filter work?
Traps contaminants to ensure only clean air reaches the engine.
Where is the air filter located?
Near the engine, often in a box near the front.
What is the function of a timing belt/chain?
Coordinates valve and piston timing.
