Exercize and Metabolism Flashcards
The more you exercize, what happens?
-Heart rate increases
-Breathing rate increases
-Breath rate increases
One exercise stops, and aerobic respiration returns, what happens?
The Lactic Acid (from anaerobic respiration) is transported in the bloodstream to the liver where it’s oxidised to form CO2 and H2O or converted back into glucose and stored as glycogen
What is Oxygen debt?
Oxygen debt (or EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption)) is the amount of oxygen needed to oxidise the lactic acid
How can we measure breath volume?
Using a Spirometer
What is metabolism?
All the chemical reactions happening in a living organism
What do metabolic reactions include?
The breakdown of molecules by enzymes
What are examples of reactions involved in metabolism?
-Conservation of glucose to starch, glycogen to cellulose
-formation of lipids
-formation of amino-acids
-formation of proteins
-respiration
-breakdown of excess proteins to form urea for excretion
How are lipids formed?
Build up of lipid molecules from a glycerol and 3 fatty acids (is a metabolic reaction)
How are amino-acids (proteins) formed?
When glucose is combined with nitrate ions. A chain of amino-acids form a protein
How does urea breakdown?
Excess amino-acids are broken down to form urea, the process occurs in the liver. The urea then is transported to the kidneys via the blood and excreted from the body
What are 3 metabolic processes in plants?
-Respiration
-Photosynthesis
-Nitrogen fixation
