exercise testing Flashcards
functional ability
actual/potential capacity of an individual to perform the activities and tasks that can be normally expected
4 factors to consider when assessing functional ability
physical, psychological, cognitive, social
functional fitness
classification of exercise which involves training the body for the activities performed in daily life
relative contradictions
caution should be taken
absolute contraindication
patient should not continue with treatment/testing
6 minute walk test
measures the distance that a patient can quickly walk on a flat/hard surface in a period of 6 mins, submaximal level, self-paced
contraindications of 6 min walk test
Relative contraindication: resting HR of more than 120, BP over 180/100
Absolute contraindication: unstable angina during previous month/myocardial infarction during previous month
shuttle walk test
audio signal directs the walking pace of patient back and forth on 10m course, walking speed increases every minute, test ends when patient cannot reach the turnaround point within the required time.
Chester step test
step 15 steps per minute and every min the tempo increases by 5 steps/min. Step height varies depending on age, history, etc
treadmill bruce protocol
multiple exercise stages of three mins each, at each stage the gradient and speed of treadmill are elevated
gold standard for assessing aerobic fitness
cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET)
