What is osteoporosis?
Decreased mineral content and weakening of bone
What may osteoporosis weakening lead to?
Fx, esp spine hip wrist
Higher incidence in men or women?
2x more in women
What does the FRAX assess?
Calculate the probability of a fx- assures people with highest fx risk gets tx.
Many people have low bone density (osteopenia)
What are secondary causes of osteoporosis?
Insulin dependency
Hyperthyroidism
Malnutrition
Liver disease
What does NOF recommend to reduce risk of fx and osteoporosis?
Ca & vit D
Regular WB & muscle strengthening
Fall prevention
Cessation of tobacco and alcohol
Pt with osteoporosis, what should they avoid?
Activity with twisting/ flexion of spine- produces high vertebral loads and high compression loads
What should a pt with osteoporosis strengthen?
Core, trunk extensors, scap stabilizers, hip extensors and abductors
What should they stretch?
Pec, abs, hip flexors
What are some recommendations for bone health?
WB endurance 3-5x/wk, resistance training 2-3x/wk
Mod-high intensity
75-80% of RM
150 min/wk mod intensity
