Exercise as a behaviour Flashcards
on the physical activity spectrum, exercises is classified as anything ……
How many MET’s is this equivalent to?
from moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity
> 3 MET’s
what proportion of time does the avg aussie adult spend moderate-vigorously active? how much time sedentary?
active 5%
sedentary 60%
what are the confounders associated with using an accelerometer to measure activity in patients?
patients tend to over-exercise in the beginning because theyre aware of being recorded.
doesnt accurately record sitting time, fidgeting, change of position, etc. Accelerometer is strapped to waistband.
as an alternative to the accelerometer, what is a better way to measure sitting time with precision?
Inclinometer strapped to thigh.
based on accelerometer based research, which groups had highest physical activity?
- men
- younger participants
- no MET syndrome
- lower BMI
NB: 20min/day different b/w reported exercise and accelerometer readings. patients over report!
what are the categories of barriers patients face in engaging in physical activity
environmental barriers (access to parks)
social barriers (fat shaming at the gym)
personal barriers (knowledge of how to exercise, perceptions towards value/need for exercising)
disease specific (immobility)
NB: data suggests environmental barriers were a bigger hindrance than disease-related barriers.
What were the pillars of the Stand Up Victoria initiative?
Stand Up
Sit Less
Move more
Main points of Australia’s Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviours Guideline 2014?
Goal:
-150-300mins of moderate physical activity/ or 75-150mins of intense physical activity each week
- muscle strengthening activities 2x week
- minimize amount of time spent in prolonged sitting, aim to break up sitting time.
