Exercise Flashcards
What is exercise
The activity requiring physical effort carried out to improve our health and physical fitness
Types of exercise
Aerobic :depends primarily on free oxygen from the atmosphere
anaerobic : it is short and doesn’t last for
Long. Body uses stored energy for exercise
Glucose is broken down and lipids too.
How does exercise improve the nervous system i
The nervous system is involved in receiving information about the environment around us (sensation) and generating responses to that information (motor responses)
It is made up of the brain, nerves and spinal cord
Spinal cord is improved by exercise in that it is strengthened
It makes the nervous system alert and improve mental health if the individual
Physical exercise boosts blood flow to your brain, quickly delivering more oxygen and nutrients to your neurons. Regular exercise is one of the best things you can do to keep your brain healthy and sharp – plus it encourages new brain cell growth.
Exercise may provide physical benefits to the brain, too, such as increasing the thickness of the cerebral cortex and improving the integrity of your white matter, the nerve fibers that connect areas of the brain’s nerve-cell-rich gray matter.
How exercise improves respiratory system
Exercise increases capability of lungs
During exercise there is an increase in physical activity and muscle cells respire more than they do when the body is at rest. The heart rate increases during exercise. The rate and depth of breathing increases - this makes sure that more oxygen is absorbed into the blood, and more carbon dioxide is removed from it
How does exercise improve the CVS
NB- when asked such a question, write what the CVS is , the organs in it and how exercise helps these organs with their function
CVS is a system that controls the circulatory system of the body.
It comprises of the heart ,the blood vessels and blood
As you exercise fat or plaques that are stored in blood vessels are broken down facilitating easy blood flow and improves HDL levels and reduces LDL activity
Exercise helps strengthen muscles.
These exercises improve the muscles’ ability to draw oxygen from the circulating blood. That reduces the need for the heart—a muscular organ itself—to work harder to pump more blood to the muscles, whatever your age.
Exercise increases the strength of the heart
How does exercise help diabetic people
How the body uses glucose during exercise. When stored glucose(glycogen) is converted by glucagon to glucose , body uses glucose during exercise using glycolysis
What causes mental distress
Stress Anxiety Panic Depression Shock
Importance of exercise
Releases stress and helps the individual socially)maybe if you’re exercising in a group you can socialize and forget about your stress.
Types of anaerobic exercise
Muscular strength- max amount of a muscle can distend Muscular endurance Muscular flexibility Isometric Isotonic Isokinetic
Anaerobic exercise depends on
The strength of the training
Importance of aerobic exercise
Blood supply to muscles
Ability of body to use oxygen
Improves weight control
Types of aerobic exercise
Jogging
Brisk walking
Difference between stretching and brisk walking( diff between anaerobic and aerobic exercise)
Stretching- you don’t move your whole body
Oxygen isn’t used
Brisk walking- the whole body is moving
Oxygen is used
What does FIts mean and what is FIT for aerobic activity
Frequency- how many times you exercise
Intensity- how intense the exercise is
Time - how long you exercise
For aerobic activity
Ideally, F should be 3-5 times each week
With I heart rate should be 60-80
T (exercise continuously for twenty minutes minimum)
If asked to explain FIt for aerobic activity- explain what exercise is and importance of exercise based on the systems, what aerobic exercise is , FIt explanation, FIt for aerobic activity
Define muscular endurance
Muscular endurance refers to the ability of a given muscle to exert force, consistently and repetitively, over a period of time.
