Exercise 8 Objectives Flashcards
Functions of skeletal system
Support, movement, protection, blood cell production, calcium storage and endocrine regulation
Name two tissue types that form skeleton
spongy and compact bone tissue
Locate and identify three major types of skeletal cartilage
Hyaline, Elastic and Fibrous cartilage
Hyaline Cartilage
found on the ends of sternum, ribs and larynx. Provides supports, flexibility, protection and develops into our adult skeleton
Elastic Cartilage
found in the ear and the epiglottis. Its tough and more flexible than hyaline cartilage.
Fibrous Cartilage
Found in the Menisci and it’s compressible, high tensile strength, pads of some joints.
Four main groups of bones based on shape
Long, short, flat and irregular
Long Bone
Least amount of spongy bone. Femur, humerus, radius, ulnar, phalanges, metacarpals, tibia, metatarsals, fibula and clavicle
Short Bone
Carpals, tarsals, patella, calcaneus
Flat Irregular
Cranium, facial bones, sternum, scapula, ribs
Irregular
Vertebrae, illiium, ishium, pubis bones
