What is the role of the executive
Making policy decisions

What is secondary legislation
A form of legislation which allows the provisions of an Act of Parliament to be brought into force or altered by ministers without requiring additional primary legislation
What are the Prerogative powers
Do not need Parliamentary approval
-making and ratifying treaties
-international diplomacy
-deployment of the armed forces overseas
-patronage powers
-ability to recommend the dissolution of parliament
-granting of pardons
-organisation of the civil service
What is the Prime Ministers Office
A staff of around 190, comprised of career civil servants special advisers. Responsible for policy advice and setting the direction of government policy. Also responsible for communications, eg the presentation of government policy.
What is a cabinet reshuffle
A series of changes to the personnel of the cabinet, instigated by the PM
What is the core executive
The heart of government, consisting of those organisations and actors who coordinate central gov activity
Bilateral meeting
A meeting between the PM and a departmental minister in which policy is agreed
