Excretory System Flashcards
What is the function of the excretory system?
The removal of waste products from the body.
Which four organs are involved in the excretory system?
- kidneys
- skin
- liver
- lungs
What is the waste product from the lungs?
Carbon dioxide
What are the jobs of the kidneys (3 things)?
- To remove urea from the blood.
- To adjust the levels of ions (salts) in the blood.
- To adjust the levels of water content in the blood.
What are the structures that act as the filters in your kidneys?
Nephrons. The nephron regulates the level of water and salts, and removes urea from the blood. At the end of the filtering process you are left with clean blood and urine.
What is the role of skin in the excretory system?
It regulates body temperature and cooling the body through evaporation of sweat.
Sweat contains waste products such as salts and urea.
What is the role of liver in the excretory system (2 things)?
- Responsible for the metabolism (chemical reactions) of many substances, especially waste substances.
- Also responsible for the production of bile. Bile helps in the removal of waste products after they have been metabolised in the liver
What is the difference between excretion and egestion?
Egestion = waste removal from the body in the form of faeces.
Excretion = metabolic waste removal in the form of urine, sweat or carbon dioxide.
What are the organs of the urinary system in order?
- Kidneys
- Ureter
- Bladder
- Urethra
