Excretion and Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
The ability of an organism to maintain a constant internal environment
Endotherm
Have a constant internal temperature despite external conditions
Ectotherms
Do not have a constant internal temperature and rely on their environment for heat
Excretion
The removal of metabolic waste from cells in the body
Piloerection
Erector muscles reacting causing our hair to stand up
Vasoconstriction
Blood vessels in the skin contract
perspiration
Sweat produced is evaporated from skin, cooling us
Vasodilation
Blood vessels expand which increases heat loss
Osmosis
The movement of water particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a semi permeable membrane
Diffusion
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration- passive
Active Transport
the movement of particles from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration- requires energy
