Excretion Flashcards
What are the main products that are excreted?
> CO2 from respiration
nitrogen-containing compounds eg. urea
other compounds such a bile pigments
How do the lungs excrete CO2?
CO2 is passed into the bloodstream and is diffused into the alveoli to be excreted as you breathe it out
How does the liver assist in excretion?
> some substances passed into bile and directly removed
> converts amino acids to urea via de amination
How is the skin involved in excretion?
> substances such as urea water and ammonia are excreted through sweat
Carbon Dioxide excretion?
> most CO2 is transported in the blood as hydrogen carbonate ions (h+ released)
Excretion of nitrogenous compounds
> body cannot store amino acids
amino group is removed to form ammonia
Ammonia is then converted to urea which is transported to the kidneys for excretion
