Q

describe the process of deamination?

A

after proteins digested into amino acids, they are absorbed into the blood and travel along the hepatic portal vein.

the amino acids enter the liver cells, which deaminate the excess amino acids. urea is produced and carried into the kidneys, which remove the urea from the blood.

urine is produced, which flows along the ureter, is stored in the bladder and flows in the urethra out of the body.

Q

what are the disadvantages of dialysis

A
  • more expensive in the long run
  • very disruptive (three 6-8 hour sessions a week)
  • do not need to find a kidney
  • need a machine, must live near one.

Q

what are the advantages of a kidney transplant?

A
  • less expensive
  • not very disruptive
  • can go anywhere, any time

need a kidney + risk of infection
