excretion Flashcards
what products do the lungs excrete?
carbon dioxide (as a byproduct of respiration)
what products do kidneys excrete?
urea and excess water and ions
what is excretion?
the removal of the waste
products of metabolism and substances in
excess of requirements
what are the main two excretory products?
urea and carbon dioxide
what is deamination?
the removal of the nitrogen-containing part of amino acids to form urea
where does deamination primarily take place?
the liver
what is the function of the kidneys?
- filtration of blood
- urine formation (through ultrafiltration and tubular reabsorption)
what are nephrons?
they are the smallest structural and functional filtering units of kidneys
what parts of the nephron are found in the cortex?
- bowmans capsule
- first coiled tubule
- second coiled tubule
what parts of the nephron are found in the medulla
- loop of henle
- collecting duct
what is dialysis?
when a kidney machine takes a patients blood, cleans it and returns the blood to circulation
what is dialysis fluid called?
dialysate
describe the process of deamination?
after proteins digested into amino acids, they are absorbed into the blood and travel along the hepatic portal vein.
the amino acids enter the liver cells, which deaminate the excess amino acids. urea is produced and carried into the kidneys, which remove the urea from the blood.
urine is produced, which flows along the ureter, is stored in the bladder and flows in the urethra out of the body.
what are the disadvantages of dialysis
- more expensive in the long run
- very disruptive (three 6-8 hour sessions a week)
- do not need to find a kidney
- need a machine, must live near one.
