Excretion Flashcards
What is excretion
Getting rid of waste, from chemical reactions
What needs to be excreted
Carbon dioxide, respiration, waste product eg: urea, water and slats foods and drinks
What is urea
Urea is made from break down of excess animo acids in high concentrations is toxic
What is homeostasis
The maintenance of constant internal environment
Examples of homeostasis
Water levels (osmoregulation) Temperature, maintain body temp PH of blood
What is a kidney
An organ that excretes and osmoregulates
The process of urine
- The liver breaks down animo acids
- Urea is transported from the liver to the kidneys
- The kidney excretes the urine
What is ADH
ADH is a hormone, the brain detects that you dont have enough water and releases ADH
What is a kidney stone
A stone made of minerals that collect if you have a high salt diet, very painful and has to be excreted
Parts of a kidney
Cortex
Pelvis
Medulla
Ureter
What is a nephron
A fictional unit of the kidney that’s produces the urine
The process of producing urea
- Ultrafiltration in the glomorous bowman’ s capsule, this filters the blood and removes water salts, ion urea, glucose
- selective reabsorption, this puts some of the useful molecules back in the blood ( salts, ion urea, glucose etc) this happens in the proximal tubule
- Reabsorption of water, water is reabsorbed into the blood in the loop of henle
