exchange surfaces Flashcards
What are the adaptions of the alveoli?
Large surface area
Moist lining
Very thing walls
Good blood supply
How do the adaptations maximise the substance exchange?
Quicker diffusion
dissolves gases
short diffusion distance
allows lots of co2 to diffuse at once.
What is the small intestine covered with?
Villi
What is the function of the small intestine?
To absorb digested food into the blood
When do stomata close and why?
When a plant is losing water fast which would result in the plant being wilt.
Which two features of a leaf increase the SA so that gas exchange can happen more quickly?
Flattened shape
air spaces in leaf
describe how a fish takes in o2 and gets rid of co2.
Mouth of fish takes in o2 and the gills shoot it out and hit the gill filaments and provide the fish with oxygen through its blood vessels.
What is gill filaments?
Lots of thin plates in each gills of the fish which increases the SA.
What is llamelae?
tiny structures in gill filaments which increases SA.
Why is it important that the fish has many capillaries in the lamellae?
to speed up diffusion?
Why do fish have a thin surface layer?
Minimise distance that the gases have to diffuse
