Add Chart Element
Within the “Chart Design” tab, the “Add Chart Element” icon allows you to change important detail elements of your chart such as: titles, legends, data labels, and the axes of your chart. Figure 5.4 highlights the various chart options that are available to you in this menu scheme.
Format Tab
The “Format” menu items are used to modify the colors and textual elements of your charts. Figure 5.5 depicts the menu items available in the “Format” tab of the “Chart” menu options.
Column Charts
Column charts are used to compare different categories of items or the same category over time. Column charts depict the types of items (or different times) across the horizontal axis and the values for each category as a “column” rising into the vertical axis.
Stacked Column Chart
Stacked column charts are used to compare categories of items or the same category over time. However, a stacked column chart breaks the column bars into segments that represent subcategories that are consistent across the columns.
Pie Charts
Pie charts are used to compare the parts of category to the whole. Typically each of the parts is expressed as percentages of the whole.
Line Chart
We use a line chart to compare the values of a particular category over time. Because line charts “connect the dots,” or connect the individual data series values; line charts are particularly helpful for uncovering trends in a dataset.
