Examination of Balance Flashcards
What happens with aging and quiet stance?
increased sway secondary to mm weakness, dec. ROM, sensory deficits
What do you look for in posture examination?
alignment in sitting and standing, is it vertical? symmetrical? foot position? base of support N or W? even wt. distribution across feet bilaterally?
What are the first 3 things to look at in the exam
Posture, quiet stance, perturbed stance
Define 3 types of perturbed stance
the surface you are standing on moves, nudge from external source, unexpected disruption during movement
ankle strategies to correct balance
slow, small corrections in anterior/posterior direction, distal to proximal mm activation
what order do u recruit mm in with ankle strategies
distal to proximal–> gastrocs, then hamstrings, then paraspinals
hip corrective strategies
larger, faster corrections
order of mm recruitment for hip strategy?
proximal to distal order, abs, quads
other balance strategies
lowering COG (iceskating), reposition feet, stepping, grasping, suspensory (squatting)
define balance
the ability to maintain center of gravity over base of support
gold standard for balance test
Berg
what is cut-off score for fxnl reach test?
10”
what is the number to remember for the Berg
46… but really u want 56/56 or as close as possible…
what is important to remember about a person’s perception of their balance
perception of balance/fear of falling is a very big risk factor one way or another, need to make sure its accurate to reality
What is a good screening tool for balance, for example, at a health fair…
single leg stance
