Small group
group where a trained professional is the leader. This group assists individuals to resolve emotional and behavior problems. ex. sex offender therapy group.
Therapy (group)
group with a professional or trained leader. This group uses mutual aid processes to create a helping environment within group. ex. group for children with divorced parents.
Mutual Aid
Group with a trained professional who is knowledgeable about the subject. This group uses the commonality of the problem or issue to build social support among members. ex. parenting group.
Psycho educational
group where a layperson with experience with the problem is the leader. Uses commonality of the problem or issue to build social support among members. ex. AA.
Self-help.
group with a professional or non professional leader that may be appointed or elected. This group is created to accomplish a specific goal or to advocate around a particular social issue. ex. committee to get something done in their city.
Task
Theory of group process that focuses on the unconscious process. the leader must understand emotional process in group. It helps members identify how their interactions in the group are similar to that of outside of the group.
psycho dynamic
theory of group process where the “group” is a symbol to describe relationship with each other. Language, behaviors, and symbols create a sense of belonging.
Symbolic interaction
Theory of group process in which the interactions within the group may mirror members patterns of interactions with others outside of the group
Systems
A group of people with a high degree of formal structure, working together to meet common goals.
Organization
Most common form of organization today. high level of structure that organizes many people. It includes chain of command, formal communications, and policies and procedures. This organization focuses on efficiency and effectiveness.
Bureaucracy
Sociology definition: linked by geography or webs of communication, common ties, interaction.
psychology definition: similarity with others, interdependence, mutual exchanges to fulfill needs, sense of belonging.
Definitions of Community.
population of at least 500 people per square mile. 75% of population lives on 3% of nations land.
Urban
one or more central cities and suburbs with a population of more than a million.
Metropolitan
Centered on an urban cluster with a population of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000.
Micropolitan
Theoretical approach that looks at conditions of communities. Studies environmental design that encourages social interaction, sense of control, and motivation to “look out” for neighborhood.
Spatial arrangement approach
Theoretical approach that focuses on social interaction rather than on the physical, spatial aspects of community.
Social Systems approach.
theoretical approach that can be socially cohesive and exclusionary, distrustful, hostile, and violent towards outsiders. It can work against social tolerance and has unequal power distribution.
Social Capital Approach
