What are the 5 aims of punishment?

Define “retribution”
Harsh ways to punish an offender, usually prison , community service or fines
Define “rehabilitation”
Ways of changing offenders behaviour to prevent future crime occurring
Define “deterrence”
Putting the offender and others off committing further crime
Define “public protection”
Making sure community are safe against criminality
Define “reperation”
Repairing damage made to victims or giving some thing back eg money or formal apology
What is “restorative justice”?
A mediation session between offender and victim where they can discuss events that had happened , hopefully repairing some damage caused
