Exam Specifications Flashcards
The North Carolina _____ Tests are designed to measure how well students understand and apply the concepts defined in the North Carolina Standard Course of Student (NCSCOS).
End-of-Grade (EOG)
Note: Science 8 EOG test specification is linked here.
The _____ defines what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of each school year or course.
North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS)
Note: The various relevant documents can be found here.
The Grade 8 EOG Science Test measures a student’s proficiency relating to the three main branches of science: _____, _____, and _____.
life science (L), earth science (E), and physical science (P)
In North Carolina, the state learning standards are referenced in the following format: _____.
grade number (8), branch of science (E, P, L), standard (1, 2, etc.), and clarifying objective (1, 2, etc.)
Ex: 8.P.1.1 translates to Grade 8; physical science; understand the properties of matter and changes that occur when matter interacts in an open and closed container; classify matter as elements, compounds, or mixtures based on how the atoms are packed together in arrangements.
The standards are grouped by unifying concepts. Unifying concept typically define the _____ (spanning weeks of instruction).
units or modules
The Science 8 EOG measures _____ and results are reported numerically (typically 244-260+) and grouped into categories (Level 1-5)
grade level proficiency and college-and-career readiness
Note: More information can be found here, along with a sample of student test results.
Students who are _____ (Level 1 or 2) demonstrate inconsistent understanding of grade level content standards and will need support.
Not Proficient
Students at _____ demonstrate sufficient understanding of grade level content standards though some support may be needed to engage with content at the next grade/course.
Level 3
Students at _____ demonstrate a thorough understanding of grade level content standards and are on track for career and college.
Level 4
Students at _____ demonstrate comprehensive understanding of grade level content standards, are on track for career and college, and are prepared for advanced content at the next grade/course.
Level 5
The EOG Science Tests consist of _____ four-response-option multiple-choice items (aka questions) and technology-enhanced items (online administration only). All items will be worth one point each.
65
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has estimated it will take about _____ for most students to complete the test.
2 hours (120 minutes)
Note: The EOG Science Tests are not designed as speeded or power tests. Students should have enough time to show what they know and are able to do. The maximum amount of time allowed for regular administration is 3 hours (180 minutes) except for students with documented special needs requiring accommodations, such as Scheduled Extended Time.
Students taking the Grade 8 EOG Science Test will receive a _____ to reference (a sample is available on the EOG webpage). All students must be provided blank paper.
The EOG tests must be administered during the last _____ days of the school year
