Exam Revision Flashcards
Psychology behaviour and mental processors
Psychology is the study of behavior and the mental process. The mental process is the steps the mind takes to think, feel, etc., while behavior is just simply how one acts.
Roles of a psychologist
Psychology is the study of behavior and the mental process. The mental process is the steps the mind takes to think, feel, etc., while behavior is just simply how one acts.
Rapport in psychology
a close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups concerned are “in sync” with each other, understand each other’s feelings or ideas, and communicate smoothly.
Difference between psychologist and psychiatrist
Psychiatrists are medical doctors and can prescribe medication, diagnos illnesses where as psychologists focus on talk therapy
Pseudoscience
a collection of beliefs or practices mistakenly regarded as being based on scientific method.
Purpose of psychological research
To find ways to measure and describe behavior. To understand why, when, and how events occur. To apply this knowledge to solving real-world problems.
Writing a hypothesis
A simple hypothesis predicts the relationship between two variables: the independent variable and the dependent variable. See this relationship through these examples. Drinking sugary drinks daily leads to obesity. Smoking cigarettes daily leads to lung cancer.
What is an independent variable and dependant variable
a variable that stands alone and isn’t changed by the other variables you are trying to measure.
The independent variable is the variable the experimenter manipulates or changes, and is assumed to have a direct effect on the dependent variable. … The dependent variable is the variable being tested and measured in an experiment, and is ‘dependent’ on the independent variable.
2-3 facts about the brain
An adult brain weighs about 3 pounds
About 75 percent of the brain is made up of water.
The human brain contains approximately one hundred billion neurons.
Label the 4 lobes
See image
2-3 functions of each lobe
Temporal-
processing auditory information, encoding of memory
Frontal-
language, memory
Parietal-
integrating sensory information, including touch, temperature, pressure and pain.
Occipital-
visual perception, including colour, form and motion
Behaviours and functions of each side of brain hemispheres
the left hemisphere controls speech, comprehension, arithmetic, and writing. The right hemisphere controls creativity, spatial ability, artistic, and musical skills. The left hemisphere is dominant in hand use and language in about 92% of people.
