The Beatitudes guide us to Heaven, assuring us that our suffering will be rewarded.
1. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
2. Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted
3. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
4. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Discuss the different types of sin and how they affect our relationship with God and with others. How can we repair these relationships?

  • original: first sin of human beings, present in all of us
  • mortal: very serious, breaks relationship with God
  • venial: less serious, dismissed personal character & weakens relationship with God
  • commission: the direct result of a freely chosen thought, word, or deed
  • omission: result of failure to do something required by God’s moral law
  • social: unjust situations that impact society
  • capital: 7 sins that lead to and reinforce other sine and vice
    We should make reparations, repent & go to Reconciliation, avoid committing those sins again.

“I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange Gods before me.” - no idolatry

“You shall not take the name of the Lord you God in vain.” - do not swear in God’s name

“Remember to keep hold the Lord’s Day.” - use Sundays for rest and worship

We can volunteer, attend Mass, and respect His creations.

4: “Honor you father and your mother.” - respect those in authority

8: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” - we should not betray or slander our neighbors

Children must respect and obey their parents. Parents must take responsibility for & teach their kids. Living an honest life means achieving true happiness.

7: “You shall not steal.” - do not take what isn’t yours

10: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods” - we should avoid greed & envy

They teach us to be grateful for what we already have. They tell us not to glorify material/temporal things. Virtues of temperance & kindness.

A

5: “You shall not kill.” We should respect life.

We are made to reflect God. All life is sacred. We should protect those who are unable to protect themselves.

What are commandments 6 and 9? Explain. How are they related? Discuss the meaning of and influence of sexual integrity and sexual disintegration on the development of moral character.

A

6: “You shall not commit adultery.” - we are called to be loyal to our spouse and significant other.

9: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.” Do not cheat on spouses or go down the path of distrust.

They ask us to love in committed relationships. We are called to give ourselves to only one person.
