Exam: Periodic Table Flashcards
What makes up the s-block?
Hydrogen, Helium, and the Alkali and Alkaline-Earth Metals
What makes up the p-block?
Contains nonmetals and metalloids;
Contains groups 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18, excluding Helium
What makes up the d-block?
Transition metals
What makes up the f-block?
Inner transition metals;
Lanthanides and Actinides
What is electronegativity?
Is the tendency for an element to attract shared electrons when forming a chemical bond
What is ionic radius?
The distance between the nucleus of an ion and the outermost shell of the ion
What is atomic radius?
The distance between an atom’s nucleus and the outer electron shell
What is ionization energy?
The amount of energy required to remove an electron from an atom
What are some characteristics of metals?
Good conductors of heat and electricity;
Malleable and ductile;
Most are solids at room temperature (except for Mercury)
What are some characteristics of nonmetals?
Poor conductors of heat and electricity;
Brittle and dull;
Can be gas, liquid, or solid
What are some characteristics of metalloids?
Have properties of both metals and nonmetals
