Q

What is the motivation behind non-monotonic logics, and why is it important for common-sense reasoning and decision-making with incomplete information?

A

General rules: Usually A, in absence of explicit information that prevents it, it is plausible to assume A. It is subjective, it might depend on the individual and the context. Language is FOL, the Default Rules are not part of the language, but of the reasoning system. (Y, D) – default theory – Y – set of default rules – D – set of FOL propositions, WFF

Q

What are the components of a default rule, namely the pre-requisite, justifications, and conclusion/consequent, and what is the intuitive meaning of such a rule?

A

If I know a(x) for a given individual x, and it is
consistent to assume b1(x), b2(x), , b … n(x) for the same individual x, then it is plausible to conclude g(x) for that x
