Ontologies provide shared vocabulary and specification of meaning within a domain. By establishing a consensual conceptualisation, ontologies facilitate understanding and compatibility between different knowledge based systems, even if they use different underlying knowledge representation systems. While ontologies primarily address the lack of shared vocabulary, they can also support in communication and translation efforts.

Ontologies define a shared vocabulary and meaning of concepts within a domain. Represented knowledge plays the role of storing problem-specific information that can be used for reasoning and solving particular tasks
