Exam P10 Flashcards
Explain the main difficulties and problems encountered when trying to share and reuse knowledge bases.
- Existence of different knowledge representation paradigms and systems
- Profound differences even within the same paradigm
- Lack of communication conventions between systems
- Lack of shared vocabulary and domain knowledge
- Full automatic translation between systems is challenging
Discuss the role of ontologies in addressing the challenges of knowledge sharing and reuse.
Ontologies provide shared vocabulary and specification of meaning within a domain. By establishing a consensual conceptualisation, ontologies facilitate understanding and compatibility between different knowledge based systems, even if they use different underlying knowledge representation systems. While ontologies primarily address the lack of shared vocabulary, they can also support in communication and translation efforts.
Describe the different roles played by represented knowledge in ontologies and knowledge bases
Ontologies define a shared vocabulary and meaning of concepts within a domain. Represented knowledge plays the role of storing problem-specific information that can be used for reasoning and solving particular tasks
