Exam 5 Flashcards
Angelology and Demonology (Millard Erickson)
What were Dionysius’ three classifications of angels?
- Thrones, Cherubim, Seraphim
- Mights, Dominions, Powers
- Principalities, Archangels, Angels
How did Dionysius’ classifications of angels relate to one another?
“The first group, closest to God, enlightened the second group, who in turn enlightened the third group” (Erickson, p. 405).
How did Dionysius say that the hierarchy of the angels should be reflected on earth?
Based on Gal. 3:19, humans were a lower order that had no real access to God except through angels. Human orders, especially in the church, should resemble the hierarchy of the angels.
What was the result of Thomas Aquinas’ emphasis on Angelology?
Thomas Aquinas’ attempts to reason various issues surrounding the nature and condition of angels resulted in a strong emphasis on the supersensible realm of angels. “[Later] theology tended to attribute everything that occurred to angelic (or demonic) activity” (Erickson, p. 406).
How did Johannes Quinstedt and Charles Hodge reason for the existence of angels?
They said that there are no gaps in nature. If there are non-spiritual beings (stones), and beings that are part spiritual and part non-spiritual (humans), there must be beings that are fully spiritual (angels).
What was Rudolf Bultmann’s attitude toward angels?
To Bultmann, angels were a myth. Today we understand that sickness is not caused by demons, but bacteria. It’s impossible to avail ourselves of modern technology and science while holding a belief in spirits and miracles.
What is the meaning of both the Hebrew and Greek words translated “angel”?
The Hebrew word mal’ak and the Greek word aggelos both mean “messenger,” whether human or angelic.
What is the meaning of Malak and Angelos in 1 Kings 19.2 and Luke 7.24?
1 Kings 19:2 - the human messenger sent by Jezebel to Elijah
Luke 7:24 - certain disciples of John the Baptist
Who is the only angel named as an archangel?
Michael
What does Psalm 148:2, 5 “clearly imply” about the origin of angels? What does Col. 1:16 say about this?
Psalm 148:2, 5 states that the angels were created at the Lord’s command. Col. 1:16 says all things were created by God for Himself, whether in heaven or on earth.
What does Job 38:6-7 say?
“…[W]ho laid [the Earth’s] cornerstone when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy” (Job 37:7)?
What does Genesis 2:1 say?
“Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished” (Gen 2:1).
What does Exo. 20:11 say?
“For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day” (Exo. 20:11).
What is the implication of Job 38:7, Gen. 2:1. and Exo. 20:11 regarding the creation of angels?
The angels were created prior to the creation of the Earth, but were a part of the Genesis 1 creation event. Erickson cannot state this with certainty though other scholars believe it.
What does Heb. 1:4 say about the nature of angels?
Angels are ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation.
What does Matt 8:16 say about the nature of angels?
Fallen angels are also spirits that can possess people. Many who were demon-possessed were brought to Jesus.
What does Matt 12:45 and Luke 11:26 say about the nature of angels?
Jesus teaches about fallen angels (demons) as spirits who possess people, sometimes in groups.
What does Luke 7:21 say about the nature of angels?
Jesus was curing people of evil spirits (demons).
What does Luke 8:2 say about the nature of angels?
Mary Magdelene had seven demons in her.
