a set of ideas (phenomena) to explain the things or the analysis of a set of facts in relation to each other

A
- if there is enough evidence to support a hypothesis and if it has been proven/disproven
- research is use to support/refute the ideas
- OT barrows theories from other professions: psychology, medicine, education, social work, systems theory
