Indications of desmopressin (pituitary drug; mimic ADH)
Treats hemophilia A and type 1 von Willebrand’s disease
Indications of octreotide (pituitary drug; antagonizes effect of GH; treats GH tumors, acromegaly, and inhibits insulin/glucagon)
Reduces severe diarrhea, flushing and life-threatening hypotension from carcinoid crisis; Esophageal varices – reduces GI secretions and motility
Contraindications of Synthroid (thyroid drug; treats hypothyroidism)
Recent MI; adrenal insufficiency; hyperthyroidism
During pregnancy – monitor TSH levels and dose adjustments q4 weeks
Adverse Effects of Synthroid (thyroid drug; treats hypothyroidism)
CP; weight loss; sweating; insomnia; tremors (all hyperthyroidism symptoms)
Nursing Implications of Synthroid (thyroid drug; treats hypothyroidism)
Once a day dosing, take same time each day, life-long treatment
Take 30 min – 1 hour before breakfast on empty stomach
Palpitations may indicate toxicity
Monitor TSH and free T4
Dosed in mcg PO
Decreases effectiveness of insulin, oral antidiabetics, digoxin
