Exam 1 Flashcards
Drug
Any chemical that affects the physiologic processes of a living organism
Pharmacology
Study or science of drugs
Pharmaceutics
How drugs affect the body based on dosage forms; the study of how various drug forms & dosages influence the way in which the drug affects the body
Pharmacodynamics
What a drug does to the body
Pharmacokinetics
What the body does to a drug; study of what happens to a drug from the time it is put into the body until the parent drug and all metabolites have left the body; study of drug movement throughout the body
Pharmacotherapeutics
Clinical use of drugs to treat and prevent illness
Generic name
(Nonproprietary name); name given by the United States Adopted Names Council
Trade name
The drug has a registered trademark; use of the name is restricted by the drug’s patent owner (usually the manufacturer)
Peak level
The time required for a drug to reach its maximum therapeutic drug monitoring
Trough level
The lowest concentration of a drug reached in the body after it falls from its peak level, usually measured in a blood sample for therapeutic drug monitoring
Dependence
A state in which there is a compulsive or chronic need for a drug
Tolerance
Reduced response to a drug after prolonged use
Agonist
A drug that binds to and stimulates the activity of one or more receptors in the body
Antagonist
A drug that binds to and stimulates the activity of one or more receptors in the body
Additive effects
Drug interactions in which the effect of a combination of two or more drugs with similar actions is equivalent to the sum of the individual effects of the same drugs given alone
Antagonistic effects
Drug interactions in which the effect of a combination of two or more drugs is less than the sum of the individual effects of the same drugs given alone; it is usually caused by an antagonizing effect of one drug on another
Synergistic effects
Drug interactions in which the effect of a combination of two or more drugs with similar actions is greater than the sum of the individual effects of the same drugs given alone
