What is refeeding syndrome?
adverse reaction for underweight person being treated in hospital

What is binging?
eating more than you normally would
What is purging?
getting rid of the food via vomiting, laxatives etc.
What is compensatory behaviors?
undo the eating
What are etiology findings for eating disorders?
family
social media
What is the binge-eating/purging type of anorexia nervoa?
binges and purges (or use compensatory behaviors)
What are physical symptoms of anorexia nervosa?
amenorrhea
constipation
sensitive to cold
loss of body fat
muscle atrophy
hair loss
dry skinm
dental caries
bradycardia/arrythmias
enlarged parotic glands
hypothermia
electrolyte imabalance
lanugo
What are findings of anorexia nervosa?

fear of obesity
feels fat when thin
loss of at least 25%
refusal to maintain minimal body weight

When does anorexia nervosa begin?
14-18
What medications are used for anorexia nervosa?
be specific
olanzapine- distorted thinking
amitrptyline- promote weight gain
fluoxetine- prevent realpse
Why is treatment difficult for anorexia nervosa?
pt resistant
suicide risk
refeeding syndrome
What is Russell’s sign?
calusses on the hands from striking the teeth
What are findings of bulimia nervosa?
late adolescence/adulthood
18-19 average onset
binge/purge/restrict/compensatory bxs
pt are aware that this is path behavior
hoarding food
45%/25% remain chronically ill
1/3 relapse
intense feelings of shame and guilt
generally within normal weight range
What are risk factors of bulimia nervosa?
obesity
early dieting
self perceptions
dissatisfaction
with body image
chaotic family with loos boundaries
possible history of abuse
cultural influences
hx of bullying/weigh related
How do you treat bulimia nervosa?
CBT
antidepressants-improve mood/reduce preoccupation
WHat is binge eating disorder?
eating lots of food in short period of time
nocompensatory behavior
shame and guilt
more commin in older adults over 35
more common in men
How do you treat binge eating?
- eating attitudes test
- care plans
- nutrition/diagnosis education
- blind weights
- observe after meals
- avoid judgemental tone
- avoid assigning good/bad hevaior
What are interventions for binging?
- ask directly about self harm
- set limits
- encourage expressions
- journaling
- CBT-cognitive disorders
