Definition of Culture:
Culture means the norms, traditions, languages, values and knowledge shared by a group of people.
Definition of Race:
Race means visible and genetic characteristics shared by a group of people.
Definition of Ethnicity:
Ethnicity means the distinct national, cultural, religious heritage shared by a sizable group of people.(origin)
Multicultural Competency
- Begins with confronting one’s own business.
* Recognize that to be a counselor means advocating for those who are marginalized.
Counselors work at 2 levels:
- Micro-level (perceptions, beliefs, conflicts)
* Macro-level (social & political forces)
Cultural Groups:
- Male vs. Female
- Ethnic Minorities
- Aging Population
- GLBT Population
- Clients with strong religious/spiritual values
Faith-based Counseling: An uneasy definition
- A spiritual person who does counseling.
- A counselor working in a religious setting.
- A person (clergy) counseling members about spiritual/religious issues.
Commonalities between Secular & Faith-Based Counselors:
- Problems arise from combo of factors. (physical disease, psychosocial/environmental pressures)
- Emphasize need for Therapeutic Relationship.
- Emphasize flexibility of methods.
- Needs of clients come before needs of counselor.
Uniqueness of Faith-Based Counseling:
- Recognize truth found in divine revelation.
- Recognize possibility of supernatural forces acting in life.
- Recognize harmful affects of sin.
- May pray and refer to scriptures in sessions.
- Openly discuss God/spiritual matters.
- Requires extensive knowledge of Psych & Theology
Counseling Clients with strong religious/spiritual values:
- Know what you believe and learn to emphasize with those who believe differently.
- Recognize when clients values are relevant to the presenting issue.
- Familiarize yourself with different belief systems and role of religion in your area.
- Join with clients’ use of spiritual language and prayer when clinically appropriate.
- Make it safe for clients to talk about anything.
Career Development:
- Requires financial sacrifice (college,training)
- Impacts other relationships (family,friends)
- Reflects/Impacts personal values
- Influences/Affects meaning/purpose in life.
Work is more than a source of income:
- Shapes our identity
- Influences self-image
- Affects self-worth

- Facilitating self-awareness
- Teaching decision making skills
