What are some characteristics of an effective counselor?
They have an identity. They use their power appropriately. They are open to change/comfy with ambiguity. They are connected to something larger than themselves. They have a life! They have a non-hostile sense of humor. Live in the present. Are able to give and receive love.
Reasons for becoming a counselor….
Need to make a difference
Need to be helpful
Need to understand/work through their own issues.

Genuine care and concern for the welfare of others
Beneficence (client welfare):
The client’s needs come first.
The counselor should practice within his/her area of competence.
The counselor should terminate or refer a client who is no longer benefitting from the service.
Non-maleficence:
” Do No Harm “
Avoid practices that have a high potential of harming clients.
Autonomy:
The clients right to self-determination. They determine the course of treatment and decide when it is over.
Justice:
Providing fair and equal treatment for ALL persons.
Fidelity:
Faithfully honoring your commitments or processes to clients. (keeping appts, doing what you said you would do, not making promises you cant keep)
Client Welfare:
“The primary responsibility of counselors is to respect the dignity and to promote the welfare of clients.”
Informed Consent:
Clients must be provided with info regarding the counseling process so they can decide if they want to participate.
