What are stereotypes?
Preconceived notions based on prior encounters, word of mouth, and media information
What is occupational discrimination?
Discrimination that results from being a member of a particular work group
What is psychological harassment in policing?
Harassment based on the use of racial slurs or other attempts to embarrass members of a minority group
What is legal cynicism?
Cultural orientation in which the law and the agents of its enforcement are viewed as illegitimate, unresponsive, and unable to ensure public safety
Why is accountability important in policing?
Police are public employees, therefore making them accountable to the public for their actions
What is double marginality?
The fact that black officers have not been fully accepted by their white coworkers and also distrusted by other blacks
What is protective coloration?
- Black officers can often gather more information that white officers would have more difficulty in obtaining
- Black officers may decrease the likelihood of charges of racial brutality being brought against the police
- Federal funding is partly dependent on equal employment opportunities and affirmative action programs
