Exam 3 Stress, Anxiety & Burnout Flashcards
What are the 2 parts of stress
Stressor —> event
Stress response —> reaction to stressor
Model of stress
Stressors —> cognitive appraisal —> stress response —> consequences
3 main sources of stress , which one is the most dangerous and why
- Daily hassles
- Major life events
- Other stressors
- daily hassles are the most dangerous since they happen more frequently
Cognitive appraisal
Our personal interpretation of a stressor
- subconscious reaction
Distress vs eustress
Distress = bad stress
Eustress = good stress
Somatic NS vs autonomic NS
Somatic = voluntary actions
Autonomic = involuntary actions
What systems is the autonomic NS broken into
- Parasympathetic = rest and digest, brings us down to homeostasis
- Sympathetic = fight or light, stress induced
How does homeostasis work
Once a stressful situation ends, parasympathetic takes over and halts the reaction
What are the 3 reactions to stress
- Physical —> nervous systems, fight or flight
- Emotional
- Behavioural
2 consequences of stress
- Anxiety
- Burnout
2 types of anxiety
- Cognitive —> how it feels
- Somatic —> what it looks like
burnout
When demand overcomes your ability to cope
- helping professions have the highest rate of burnout
4 stages of the general adaptation syndrome
- Homeostasis
- Alarm stage
- Resistance stage
- Exhaustion stage
Why do you need to experience an appropriate level of stress
If you dont have constant stress (low levels), you wont be able to cope when stressful situations happen
Selective awareness
Helps to appraise situations more positively
